A significant step forward for Berlin's innovation landscape: the FUBIC (Business and Innovation Center next to Freie Universität Berlin Campus) celebrated its topping-out ceremony on October 23, 2025. Located in the heart of Berlin-Dahlem's science quarter at Fabeckstraße 60-62, this ambitious project is transforming a former American military hospital into a cutting-edge hub for tech startups and young companies.
According to information from WISTA's press release, the innovation center will span five floors and approximately 30,000 square meters, providing space for up to 80 technology-oriented startups focused on life sciences, healthcare, and IT. The renovation preserved the original structure while adding two additional floors – a sustainable approach that saves around 3,500 tons of CO₂ compared to new construction.
The FUBIC building forms the centerpiece of a forward-thinking innovation campus that will eventually include six privately financed office and laboratory buildings, totaling roughly 66,000 square meters. The first building, FUHUB, is already operational with tenants including a 600-square-meter Scale Up Lab supporting prototype development in chemistry, pharmaceuticals, and material sciences.
What sets FUBIC apart is its sustainability commitment. The campus operates on an electricity-only energy supply system, featuring rooftop and facade photovoltaic panels, a large battery storage unit, and four underground ice storage facilities for peak load management. Even the glass facade of the new floors generates electricity.
Berlin's Senator for Economics, Franziska Giffey, emphasized the project's significance: "FUBIC represents another location where excellent research transforms into economic strength and jobs." The city supports the development with 45 million euros from GRW funds, strengthening Berlin's international position as a biotech hub.
