A Berlin-based startup is setting new standards in autonomous vehicle safety with an innovative radar system. According to EU Startups, Xavveo has secured €7.9 million in funding to develop its distributed Photonic Radar technology.

Founded by Dr. Sven Otte and Dr. Stefan Meister, former founders of Sicoya, along with Intel veteran Dr. Ulrich Keil, Xavveo addresses crucial limitations in current autonomous driving technology. Their system utilizes Silicon Photonics to create a distributed radar network around vehicles, achieving LIDAR-level precision with angular resolution below 0.1 degrees.

Unlike traditional sensors, the system maintains reliability in challenging weather conditions such as fog and heavy rain. This breakthrough could accelerate the widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles, which has been hindered by sensor technology limitations.

"Autonomous vehicles represent one of the most complex engineering challenges of our time," says CEO Dr. Sven Otte. "Once fully deployed, AVs will democratize mobility and significantly reduce carbon emissions."

The funding round attracted prominent deep-tech investors, including Vsquared and imec.xpand. Michael Jobst from Vsquared Ventures emphasizes that the system "is set to become a critical enabler of the future of mobility."

Beyond autonomous vehicles, Xavveo's technology shows promise in industrial automation, defence, consumer electronics, and medical technology - sectors representing a combined market opportunity of $26 billion.

The new funding will support technology development, team expansion, and strategic partnerships with automotive and technology companies.
