Berlin's Charité – Universitätsmedizin has once again secured 8th place in Newsweek's "World's Best Smart Hospitals" ranking, marking the second consecutive year in this prestigious position. The achievement makes Charité the only European hospital in the global top 10, according to information from the Charité press release.
The ranking recognizes healthcare institutions that lead innovation and deploy advanced technologies to transform healthcare delivery, improve treatment outcomes, and promote population health. Charité's continued success demonstrates Berlin's position as a hub for medical technology advancement.
"The renewed recognition as one of the world's leading smart hospitals validates our digitalization strategy," says Prof. Heyo K. Kroemer, Charité's CEO. "It encourages us to continue integrating digital innovations into clinical practice so patients benefit directly."
Digital Strategy Transforms Patient Care
Charité's digitalization strategy encompasses several key components: networked medical technology, telemedicine, AI-supported diagnostics, and a new central hospital information system currently under procurement. These technologies relieve physicians and nursing staff while accelerating diagnoses and tailoring treatments to individual patient needs.
The hospital is also pursuing structured digitalization of medical records and developing a central data platform. The goal is to efficiently and securely utilize high-quality clinical data for both immediate patient care and research purposes.
Excellence Across Medical Specialties
Beyond digital innovation, Charité achieved top 10 rankings in Newsweek's "World's Best Specialized Hospitals 2026" across multiple disciplines including neurology, neurosurgery, cardiology, cardiac surgery, endocrinology, and orthopedics. Additional strong performances were recorded in oncology, gastroenterology, and pediatrics.
"That we rank among the world's best hospitals in so many different disciplines shows the breadth of our expertise," Prof. Kroemer notes. The success stems from combining highly qualified personnel, scientific excellence, and modern infrastructure.
The Newsweek rankings, created in collaboration with data platform Statista, evaluate hospitals through worldwide surveys of medical professionals, quality certificate analysis, and patient satisfaction data.
