Berlin just got a major boost for its reputation as a tech and innovation hub. Google has officially opened the Google AI Center Berlin, housed in the historic Gropius building, marking what the company calls another milestone in its decade-long commitment to AI research in the German capital.
The launch event, attended by Federal Digital Minister Dr. Karsten Wildberger and Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner, brought together researchers, business leaders, and policymakers. According to Google's press release, the center is designed as a platform where experts from Google DeepMind, Google Research, and Google Cloud can collaborate with thought leaders from academia, industry, and government.
The new space includes a dedicated research floor, an AI demo area, a TechTalk event space for up to 80 guests, and five event rooms hosting around 200 events per year.
One standout project: a partnership with CityLAB Berlin, backed by a $1 million Google.org grant and Germany's first Google.org Fellowship. The goal is to simplify access to basic pension benefits for seniors using an AI-powered assistant that turns complex forms into plain-language conversations. The solution will be released as open-source software.
On the business side, companies like Mercedes-Benz, Deutsche Bank, Vodafone, and OTTO are already using Google AI to improve their products and services, from smarter in-car navigation to better customer support.
Google's own research ties the center's opening to a wider economic argument: a recent study co-published with IW Consult estimates AI could add up to 440 billion euros to Germany's economy.
Berlin's AI scene has deep roots here. Local researchers co-authored the foundational Transformer paper and contributed to landmark models including Gemini.
