OKI Opens Berlin R&D Lab to Boost Photonics Tech

Japanese technology company OKI has launched a new research and development center in Berlin, Germany, marking a significant expansion of its European operations. The OKI Berlin Lab officially opened on June 1, 2025, as part of the company's strategy to strengthen photonics technology on a global scale.

According to information from the company's press release, the Berlin facility represents OKI's commitment to advancing its core photonics capabilities through collaboration with leading European research organizations. The center will focus on joint research projects with EU institutions, particularly in Germany where photonics technology development is thriving.

The new lab aims to dramatically accelerate improvements to OKI's edge devices, including optical fiber sensors and compact laser vibrometers. Through partnerships with European businesses in photonics clusters and optomechatronics, OKI expects to gain technological advantages in key sectors like infrastructure, manufacturing, and healthcare.

Housed within a Berlin incubation facility, the center will employ researchers dedicated to external collaborations and technology marketers focused on real-world deployment of optomechatronics solutions. The facility also features a showroom where visitors can experience OKI's latest technological innovations firsthand.

This European expansion builds on OKI's broader Technology Strategy announced in November 2023, which introduced the Edge Platform technology concept for solving social challenges. The company previously established a technology exploration base in Silicon Valley in 2024 to enhance startup collaborations.

"OKI Berlin Lab can enable OKI to strengthen core technologies through joint research with leading research organizations and photonics clusters in the EU," stated Yoichi Kato, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. The company plans to verify its research achievements in Europe before expanding them globally to APAC and other regions.

Founded in 1881, OKI operates as Japan's leading information and telecommunication manufacturer, serving customers through Public Solutions, Enterprise Solutions, Component Products, and Electronics Manufacturing Services divisions.
