Startups in Berlin raised more money than anywhere else in Germany last year, so the new startup barometer by EY reveals. In Germany there were 1160 financing rounds in 2021, 56% more than in the previous year, totalling at approximately €17.4 billion. 60% of this funding, that’s €10.5 billion, flowed into Berlin startups. This includes also the biggest of the deals, with more than four times as many rounds at over €100 Million (33 in total), and eight at over €500 million, concomitant with the rise in unicorns, young companies with a valuation of more than US$1 billion. While fintech/insurtech, e-commerce, and software & analytics were the big winners, the highest round at €861 million went to Berlin-based food delivery startup Gorillas.
